TUCO has promoted a number of other calypso competitions as part of it’s carnival menu.
The National Junior Calypso Monarch
- The National Extempo Monarch.
The Extempo competition up until 2009, formed part of the final which saw the crowning of a Humour, Soca Chutney, social commentary and political commentary champion. As of 2010, the show usually held on the Thursday before carnival will now be known as “Kaisorama“ or Terrific Thursday (The Night of Champions). The National Junior Calypso Monarch Competition has now become one of the premier events in the Carnival Calender, and is Co-Ordinated by a national junior calypso committee comprising teachers, school principals and parents. The new TUCO will see the inclusion of a scholarship program as part of its youth development. Our partnerships with COSTAAT, The Hospitality Institute, The UWI and UTT ensures that there is an organic link between the artistic and the academic development of our nation’s youth. “LONG LIVE KAISO” TUCO, is officially recognized as the bargaining body for Calypsonians. This was sanctioned by an Act of Parliament No. 33 of 1998. The list of events of the Organisation is wide ranging and includes the following:
- Monthly Calypso Concerts • Workshops and Seminars ( For Junior and Senior Calypsonians )
- Calypso History Month (Held in the Month of October)
- Administration of Calypso Tents
- Administration of TUCO Competitions
- Rapso Fest
- School Projects
- Lectures and Exhibitions
The new mandate for the Organisation is that it must become more self-sufficient and commercially viable. In light of this TUCO is re-organizing internally to become more professional and adopting a more aggressive marketing stance. This involves education at the school level placing calypso music at all available avenues, to cement the position of Calypso and ensure its viability. Calypso, as described by the late Mr. Kelvin Pope “THE MIGHTY DUKE” is “editorial in song” a distillation of the storytelling of many cultures, including West African and French that is uniquely Trinbagonian. Since Carnival 1998 TUCO has been responsible for the production and promotion of the National Calypso Monarch Competition in partnership with the National Carnival Commission. In addition to this we have promoted a number of other calypso competitions as part of the Carnival menu:
- The National Junior Calypso Monarch
- The National Extempo Monarch
- Categories Competition
- Humour, Soca Chutney,
- Social Commentary and Political Commentary
TUCO also partnered with the National Dance Association to introduce the National Limbo Championships in 1998. A few years prior to this it was the strategic partnership with the Caribbean Prestige Organisation which saw the birth of the Soca Monarch Competition. Today the International Soca Monarch is one of the biggest events in the Carnival celebration. Outside of the annual Carnival celebrations, TUCO has a track record that speaks for itself. We have been involved in the promotion of the first ever World Carnival Competition held in Trinidad and Tobago at the National Stadium as well as the first World Carnival Conference held in Hartford Connecticut-USA. We also produced the Carifesta Calypso Monarch event in Trinidad and Tobago 1992 and 2006. The Independence Calypso Monarch Competition held in 2005 was organized and produced by TUCO in collaboration with the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs.
